Dental Orthotics for Headache Relief
A migraine can lay anyone low, and regular sufferers may experience a diminished quality of life. While there are many different types of headache treatment available, our Cincinnati dentists can prescribe a custom orthotic appliance to patients who suffer migraine-type symptoms originating from a disorder of the jaw joint.
The headache symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction often originate from the pressure an off-balance bite places on nerves in the face. An orthotic can reduce and even eliminate the pain caused by TMD.
Sometimes called an oral splint or bite splint, an orthotic is worn like an athletic mouth guard. The appliance corrects the bite so that it doesn’t interfere with the function of the TMJ. It can also minimize teeth grinding and clenching in order to prevent further aggravation of the joint.
Dr. Gary and Dr. Tara have undergone extensive continuing education in neuromuscular dentistry. This additional training makes it possible for our dentists to do the following:
- Use advanced diagnostic tools to track the movement and functionality of your bite
- Assess the impact bite mechanics are having on structures in your face, head, neck, and other areas of the body
- Determine a comfortable resting position for your jaw that doesn’t strain the TMJ
- Design an orthotic that helps bring your bite into this ideal position
