Diagnosing Migraine Headaches
Many patients who suffer from frequent headaches don’t think to visit a dentist. However, if you’re looking for migraine treatment, the Cincinnati dentists at Hardin Advanced Dentistry have significant experience helping patients find relief from headaches caused by dysfunction of the jaw.
Migraine headache symptoms can stem from disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The TMJ connects the upper and lower jaw. When this joint becomes misaligned, it can put pressure on nerves in the face, potentially resulting in serious pain in the head and neck.
Though TMJ disorder can be a cause of migraine-like symptoms, diagnosing whether or not the problem stems from a disorder of the jaw is crucial to effective treatment. Other causes of migraines include:
- Stress
- Lack of sleep
- Prolonged exposure to bright lights and/or loud noises
- Food sensitivities and allergies
- Too much caffeine or alcohol
- Disturbances to regular sleep schedule
- Chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc.
- For women, changes in estrogen levels
The most suitable migraine treatment will depend on what’s causing it. If your severe headaches are caused by a misalignment of the jaw, our dentists can recommend customized treatment options to keep your bite working properly and your head free from pain.
