When Dental Problems Cause Migraines
It’s no secret that dental issues can cause migraines. Hardin Advanced Dentistry has been offering residents of Dayton and Cincinnati migraine treatment for years, and many patients who have come to us with headaches have found that dental work can help reduce or even eliminate them. But how do you know if our dentists can help you with your migraines?
To determine whether dental treatment is a good idea for treating your migraines, we need to examine your jaw for signs of temporomandibular joint disorder, called TMJ or TMD for short. If the joints in your jaw are not aligned properly, it can cause chronic pain that will only go away with treatment and therapy to bring them back into alignment.
In order to determine whether you have TMJ, our dentists will look for a few things, including:
- Whether your jaw joint makes clicking or grinding sounds
- Whether your jaw locks up
- How your bite is aligned
- Anomalies in the facial muscles
- X-rays of your face and jaw
A dentist might order other procedures, like an MRI or CT scan, if the results are inconclusive. Once we have determined that you have TMJ, we can begin to outline a treatment plan, which can vary from using a corrective mouthpiece to oral reconstructive surgery, depending on the severity of the condition.
