Dental Crowns
in Mason, Ohio

Restore strength, beauty, and confidence with custom dental crowns designed to look and function like your natural teeth.

Trust Hardin Advanced Dentistry for Advanced Crown Restorations in Cincinnati

As an Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, a credential held by less than 1% of dentists worldwide, Dr. Tara Hardin brings nearly two decades of experience to every crown restoration.

Her training at the Las Vegas Institute, which includes over 278 hours of advanced education in aesthetics and restorative science, ensures that your crown will not only restore function but also enhance the natural beauty of your smile.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns, sometimes called dental caps, are custom-made restorations that cover the entire visible portion of a damaged or weakened tooth.

Crowns work by encasing the tooth from the gum line upward, creating a protective barrier that restores the tooth's structure and prevents further damage.

Modern crowns are typically made from high-quality materials such as:

  • Porcelain
  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal

According to the Cleveland Clinic, dental crowns can last 15 years or longer with proper care, making them a durable solution for tooth restoration.

Hardin Advanced Dentistry practices metal-free dentistry whenever possible, using all-porcelain or ceramic crowns that eliminate the unsightly metal line sometimes visible at the gum line with traditional crowns.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns offer comprehensive benefits that go beyond simple tooth repair:

  • Restore strength and function to teeth weakened by decay, cracks, or large fillings
  • Protect teeth after root canal treatment, preventing fractures and extending tooth life
  • Improve aesthetic appearance by correcting discoloration, misshapen teeth, or other cosmetic concerns
  • Provide long-lasting durability, with proper care extending crown life for 15+ years
  • Enable natural chewing and speaking by restoring the tooth's original shape and bite alignment
  • Prevent further tooth damage by sealing and protecting compromised tooth structure
  • Complete dental implant restorations, creating a permanent replacement for missing teeth
  • Enhance facial structure by maintaining proper tooth alignment and preventing bone loss

Are You a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

You may benefit from a dental crown in Cincinnati if you experience any of the following:

  • Structural Damage: Large cavities that are too extensive for traditional fillings, leaving insufficient natural tooth structure to support a filling safely.
  • Post-Root Canal Treatment: Teeth that have undergone root canal therapy require crowns to protect the weakened structure and restore full function.
  • Cracked or Fractured Teeth: Teeth with cracks, chips, or fractures that compromise the tooth's integrity and could worsen without protection.
  • Severe Wear: Teeth worn down by grinding (bruxism), acid erosion, or natural aging that have lost significant enamel.
  • Cosmetic Concerns: Severely discolored, misshapen, or unattractive teeth that detract from your smile's overall appearance.
  • Dental Implant Completion: Missing teeth being replaced with dental implants, where the crown serves as the visible, functional tooth portion.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Your Crown Procedure

Consultation and Cost

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation where Dr. Hardin examines your tooth, reviews your dental and medical history, and discusses your aesthetic goals. Digital photography and advanced diagnostic imaging help create a complete picture of your oral health.

During this visit, we'll explain:

  • The crown procedure in detail
  • Answer your questions
  • Provide a transparent cost estimate.

Crown costs vary based on material selection, tooth location, and whether additional treatments like root canals are needed.

We accept cash, checks, and major credit cards, and offer flexible financing through Alphaeon and CareCredit to make your treatment accessible and affordable.

The Crown Procedure

First Visit: Dr. Hardin carefully prepares your tooth by removing decay and reshaping it to accommodate the crown. We use our iTero digital scanner to capture precise 3D impressions. A temporary crown protects your tooth while our lab crafts your permanent restoration, typically within 2-3 weeks.

Second Visit: Once your custom crown arrives, Dr. Hardin removes the temporary crown, meticulously checks the fit and appearance of your permanent crown, and makes any necessary adjustments. After ensuring perfect color matching and comfortable bite alignment, she permanently bonds the crown using advanced dental cement.

For many patients, we offer the convenience of CEREC technology, which allows Dr. Hardin to design, create, and place your permanent crown in a single appointment. After preparing your tooth and capturing digital impressions, our in-office milling unit fabricates your custom porcelain crown in approximately 90 minutes. You'll leave the same day with your permanent restoration fully in place.

Recovery and Results

Immediately After Placement: You may experience slight sensitivity to temperature or pressure, which typically subsides within a few days. Any temporary numbness from local anesthesia wears off within 2-4 hours.

First Few Days: Mild soreness around the gum line is normal as tissues adjust to the new crown. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually provide adequate comfort. Avoid extremely hard or sticky foods during this initial period.

First Two Weeks: Most patients report complete comfort by the end of the second week. Your crown should feel natural when biting, chewing, and speaking. Contact our office if you experience persistent discomfort or if your bite feels uneven.

Long-Term Results: With proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, your crown can last 15 years or longer (NCBI). Brush twice daily, floss carefully around the crown margins, and attend your scheduled cleanings at Hardin Advanced Dentistry to maximize your crown's longevity.

Related Dental Restorations

  • Dental Bridges: If you're missing one or more teeth, a dental bridge uses crowns on adjacent teeth to support replacement teeth, restoring both function and appearance.
  • Dental Implants: For missing teeth, dental implants topped with custom crowns provide the most permanent, natural-looking replacement option available.
  • Veneers: If your tooth requires only cosmetic enhancement without structural restoration, porcelain veneers may be a less invasive alternative to crowns.
  • Inlays and Onlays: For moderate damage that doesn't require full crown coverage, these partial restorations can preserve more natural tooth structure while providing adequate protection.

Dental Crowns FAQ

Can I eat normally with a dental crown?

Yes. Once your permanent crown is in place and any initial sensitivity subsides, you can eat all your favorite foods normally. Crowns are designed to withstand normal chewing forces.

What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers the entire tooth from the gum line up, providing both structural support and cosmetic enhancement. A veneer is a thin shell that covers only the front surface of a tooth and is used primarily for cosmetic improvements on teeth that don't require structural reinforcement.

Do dental crowns require special care?

Crowns don't require any special maintenance beyond excellent oral hygiene. Brush twice daily, floss carefully around the crown margins, and visit Hardin Advanced Dentistry for regular cleanings and checkups every six months.

What happens if my crown falls off?

While rare, crowns can occasionally become loose or dislodged. If this happens, contact our office immediately. Keep the crown in a safe place and avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Dr. Hardin can often re-cement the crown if it's undamaged.

Will I need a root canal with my crown?

Not necessarily. Many crowns are placed on teeth that don't require root canals. However, if your tooth has extensive decay, severe damage, or infection reaching the pulp, Dr. Hardin may recommend root canal therapy before crown placement to ensure long-term success.

Can a crowned tooth still get cavities?

While the crown itself cannot decay, the natural tooth structure beneath it and around the margins can still develop cavities if proper oral hygiene isn't maintained. This is why regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings are essential for protecting your crowned teeth and ensuring their longevity.
