All-on-4 Dental Implants
Cincinnati, Ohio

All-on-4 dental implants is one of the most effective teeth replacement options for edentulous patients, i.e., patients missing all teeth. All-on-4 implants are the ideal alternative to traditional dentures and single-tooth implants, allowing you to permanently replace all your teeth in a single session. Unlike dentures, all-on-4 implants are permanent — they look, feel, and function like actual teeth. Unlike single-tooth implants, you don’t need implants for each tooth but rather just four implants for an entire arch of teeth.

At Hardin Advanced Dentistry, we give our patients access to the latest restorative and teeth replacement options. If you’re missing all or most of your teeth but don’t want the discomfort and social anxiety associated with dentures, please contact our dental clinic to discuss your all-on-4 options.

What are Dental Implants?

To understand all-on-4 dental implants, you must first understand dental implants. An implant is a small titanium post that’s screwed into the jawbone underneath the socket of your missing tooth. It essentially acts as a replacement root—over time, your bone tissues heal around the implant (osseointegration), making the titanium implant a firmly rooted part of your dental anatomy. Once your jawbone has healed completely, the prosthetic can be attached to the implant.

What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

Traditionally, each implant supports one dental crown or bridge. However, all-on-4 is an innovative teeth replacement technique wherein four strategically-positioned implants can support an entire arch of teeth. Instead of surgically inserting an implant for each tooth, the all-on-4 technique involves placing 4 implants on the upper jaw and 4 on the lower jaw. Once your jawbone heals around the titanium implants, dentures are permanently attached over the implants. The replacement teeth look, feel, and function like natural teeth and the implants prevent jawbone disintegration, holding your facial structure in place.

The Step-by-Step Process

  • Consultation: The all-on-4 dental implants procedure starts with a private consultation with our dentist. We review your dental history and discuss your goals to determine if you’re a viable candidate for all-on-4 implants.
  • Tests: We take numerous dental exams and tests, including 3D scans, to curate the ideal treatment plan. The digital impressions help us curate the ideal set of replacement teeth for you.
  • Procedure: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in the oral surgeon’s office. The surgeon strategically inserts four titanium implants into your upper and lower jaws, choosing the ideal location to support the prosthetic. Once the implants are in place, the dentist or surgeon places a set of temporary teeth that look natural and real.
  • Follow-Up: We schedule several follow-up sessions to ensure your jawbone heals correctly around the implants. The recovery and healing process may last several months — you’ll have to wear temporary teeth during that time.
  • Final Step: Once your mouth has healed completely and your dental implants have stabilized, we replace the temporary teeth with permanent dentures.

Recovery

After the dental implant surgery, the healing or recovery process may last for 3 to 8 months. You might experience some swelling, bleeding, and discomfort for a few days, following which the side-effects will gradually dissipate. You’ll be on a soft food and liquid diet for 2 to 3 months and avoid smoking altogether. However, even though you’ll be on a soft food diet, you’ll stop feeling the implants in a few days or weeks—over time, you won’t even realize you have implants because they’ll become a part of your dental anatomy.

Am I a Candidate?

You’re a suitable candidate for all-on-4 implants if you’ve lost all or most of your teeth and want to replace them permanently. This procedure is also suitable if you can’t get single-tooth implants because of bone loss. Most importantly, you should consider all-on-4 implants if you want to restore your natural and beautiful smile with a single in-office session.
