Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common general dentistry issue. It is estimated that a large number of adults currently have or will have some form of gum disease, most commonly gingivitis, which is identifiable by swelling and bleeding in the gums. Left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease in which tissue and bone can also become infected, which may result in tooth loss and increase your risk for systemic issues such as heart disease and respiratory illness.

If you live in the Mason, Ohio area and have noticed any of the signs of gum disease, please contact Hardin Advanced Dentistry by phone at (513) 216-2935 today to schedule a periodontal evaluation.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is an effective and minimally invasive way to treat gum disease and help prevent serious oral and systemic health issues. With this treatment, Dr. Tara Hardin will use special instruments to thoroughly clean teeth below the gum line and down to the roots, removing bacteria, debris, and tartar to help eliminate infection.

Following scaling and root planing we may place antibiotic fibers in the gingival pockets to completely eliminate infection. The necessity of this step is based on the specific needs of individual patients and will be discussed with you during your appointment. Laser treatment for gum disease may also be used when deemed necessary by one of our experienced Ohio dentists.
