Can Fluorosis be Treated?
Fluorosis is the discoloration of teeth caused by excessive fluoridation of water. Appearing as ribbons of yellow and brown or producing a mottled look to the teeth, fluorosis is an intrinsic stain, meaning it is underneath the enamel.
Because it is underneath the enamel, topical tooth whitening solutions will do little to address fluorosis. In fact, some options – particularly those purchased at stores – can enhance the appearance of fluorosis by lightening surrounding enamel and drawing a clear distinction between the different areas of the teeth.
While a number of factors will contribute to your treatment options, the Cincinnati cosmetic dentists at Hardin Advanced Dentistry may recommend teeth with fluorosis be covered completely. This can be accomplished with advanced cosmetic dentistry options such as:
- Porcelain veneers
- Dental bonding
- Dental crowns
Options including Lumineers® and DURAthin® Veneers are not typically suitable for the treatment of fluorosis due to their relative thinness and translucency. However, the ideal option for your smile will be based on your specific needs and can best be determined through a consultation with one of our cosmetic dentists. During this consultation we can evaluate the stains on all of your teeth, discuss your various treatment options, and help you choose which one will help you reach your aesthetic goals.
