What is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is among the most commonly performed of dental procedures. This minimally invasive treatment is highly effective at treating gum disease, and with proper oral hygiene procedures, the progression of gum disease can be halted, allowing your gums to heal.
Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that supports the teeth. The most common signs of gum disease are swollen, bleeding gums. Other possible symptoms include:
- Gum recession (gum pulling away from the tooth)
- Oral pain and discomfort
- Loose teeth
- Chronic halitosis (bad breath)
Scaling and root planing is a very effective and minimally invasive way to protect your teeth and gums from the progression of gum disease. When you elect this treatment, our dentists will thoroughly clean your teeth using special instruments. By cleaning your teeth below the gum line down to the roots, we are able to remove the bacteria, debris, and tartar that could lead to infection.
After the procedure, we may place antibiotic fibers in the treated area to prevent infection. We can also perform laser treatment if your gum disease warrants it. We’ll discuss the details of your procedure in a comprehensive evaluation.
Gum disease is treatable if identified early, and periodontal scaling and root planning can effectively improve your oral health. Please contact Hardin Advanced Dentistry today, or call 513-398-4448, to schedule an appointment with one of our experienced Cincinnati general dentists.
